Veterans can be qualified for the Veterans Administration’s (VA) “Aid and Attendance” benefit. Veterans and their spouses who require non-medical care/assistance with activities of daily living in their homes or selected places of residence can get up to $2,200 per month under this benefit. Only 3% of the estimated 15 million Veterans who may be eligible for this benefit are presently making use of it because the vast majority are unaware of its existence or have been incorrectly told by the VA that they do not qualify.
This benefit requires that the veteran or the surviving spouse comply with the following:
- They are over age 65.
- They are a Veteran, a spouse of a living Veteran, or a surviving spouse of a Veteran.
- The Veteran served in “Active Military” status for 90 days during an approved time of war: WWII, Korean War, or Vietnam War.
- The Veteran had an honorable discharge.
- The Veteran or surviving spouse meets income requirements.
- The Veteran, spouse of a living Veteran, or surviving spouse of a Veteran needs regular assistance with bathing, grooming, meal preparation, etc., to stay independent in their home or chosen residence.
